Were you a Taskmaster mega fan going into filming or did you just want an excuse to hang out with Tom Cashman?
No one no one wants to hang out with Tom Cashman and you know it! That’s a trick question. However, I think every comedian, whether they admit to it or not, secretly loves the idea of considering how they would go being put through the Taskmaster ringer and I am no exception. I haven’t necessarily watched every single episode from every single version of the show that’s ever been made anywhere in the world, but I certainly am a fan and was keen to get stuck in and see how I would fare.
Were you given any advice going in from past Taskmaster contestants? And what advice would you give to the next round of contestants?
Once I knew I was cast, I immediately called former contestants Wil Anderson and Pete Helliar to gain some insight into what I should prepare myself for. Wil was very good at providing me with some real nuts-and-boltsadvice on the intellectual side of reading into the wording of each task, whereas Pete just had the great suggestion of packing a spare change of dry underwear – which did come in handy!
My main piece of advice that I would pass on to the next group would be not to overthink what you may have got right or wrong too much. Even the task that you think you absolutely botched could come up hilariously funny in the edit and make you look like a superstar. Let it all go at the end of each day or it’ll do your head in.
Was there a moment during filming where you thought, I’ve absolutely nailed this, … only to watch it back and realise you’d completely missed the brief?
Oh yes indeed, without a doubt. There is one particular task involving missing letters to a puzzle, which at the time I walked away from afterwards positively buzzing with the confidence that I had cracked the code and absolutely nailed it. When it went to air and I saw what everyone else had done, I realized I could not have been more resoundingly wrong.
Which task broke you the most mentally, and which one are you still convinced you were robbed on?
If you are a fan of Taskmaster, you would know that there is a regular feature of a potential sabotage when it comes to the team tasks. Without giving too much away, let me just say that what happens during our particular teamsabotage had me completely and utterly bewildered, questioning and knocked for a loop right up until our studio reveal many months later. I still can’t shake what happened to this day. It totally did my head in but I hope I come out of it looking ok.
I’ve known Taskmaster Tom Gleeson for so many years now that I knew he would probably come for me in a playful way because we’re such good mates. But yeah, while I took most of it in my stride, I still maintain he did me dirty on my “moving movie” task.
If your performance this season had to be summed up as a headline, what would it be?
Say hi to your fun for me!
