We’ll Never Tyre of the 2024 Formula 1 Grand Prix!

Paramount, get ready to start your engines! The countdown to the Formula 1® Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2024 is officially on! And we are wheely excited.

This year, Formula 1 fan favourite, Guenther Steiner will join 10’s stellar coverage, led by Tara Rushton and Scott MacKinnon, Formula 1 World Champion Damon Hill, Formula 1 expert Tom Clarkson, motorsport commentator Richard Craill, and Formula 1 reporters Rosanna Tennant and Sam Power, with their first-class commentary covering all the action on and off the track.

We sat down with 10’s F1 reporter and ultimate rev-head, Tim McDonald to get the run down.

Tell us about your love of motorsports and where it all began.

Like most F1 drivers, I started racing from an early age. Granted that was Mario Kart, sure. But you have to start somewhere. For me though, it was standing out on the hill at Albert Park for the first time, when I was 9 or 10 years old that really cemented my love of motorsport (and dodgy kebab vans).

What sets the Grand Prix apart from other sporting events?

The speed. The sound. The danger. Nothing else matches it. There’s a crocodile race in a Darwin pub that comes close, but you can’t beat the Grand Prix.

Formula 1 legend Guenther Steiner will join 10’s coverage this year. What does that add to our broadcast?

It adds seven staff members on a “swear beep” button. But it also brings one of the sport’s most iconic, most loved characters! He spent 10 years as Haas Team Principal, so no one has better insights into the current crop of drivers, teams and what goes on behind the scenes.

What category, outside of F1, are you most geared up for and why? (see what we did there?)

So many competitive categories – F2, Supercars, Carrera Cup. But I’m looking forward to the new addition this year – the UberEats race. 24 drivers with 24 lukewarm pizzas, and if personal experience is anything to go by they’ll all get lost before the chequered flag comes out.

Who is the ultimate driver to watch this year?

We’re spoilt for choice – 3 World Champions, 2 Aussies and Valtteri Bottas’s mullet.

In your time covering the F1, or during your fandom years prior, who has made you the most star-struck?

Last year I got the chance to be up on the Albert Park podium interviewing the 1996 World Champion, Damon Hill. That was a special moment. Being escorted off by track security halfway through, less so.
