Dave Hughes

What was a typical outfit for a night out when you were 18?

Acetate blue tracksuit pants, flannel shirt, zip-up Crosby vinyl shoes.

What was your first mobile phone – and what could it do?

Nokia, and it could play Snake, do text messages and you could call people.

How would you spend your last $20?

Hot chips and dim sims.

What song defined your teenage years – and why?

Loser — “I’m a loser baby so why don’t you kill me.” I had low self-esteem.

What was the biggest flex when you were in high school?

A new fangled hairdresser shop opened in my hometown of Warrnambool and I got a cut and a blow dry. I got the nickname ‘Dusty Springfield’ because of my cool new large hair.

What was your go-to Friday night plan when you were 16?

In football season it would be fish and chips and an early night. Out of football season it would be fish and chips and cards at a mate’s joint with some sneaky underage drinking.

The one thing you’d save from a house fire (besides people and pets)?

My journal. I’ve got an entry for every day for the last five years at least.

How do you feel about phone calls vs text vs voice notes?

I like to speak to people so I get annoyed when they let my calls ring out then send me a text. I don’t get voice notes. The kids do nothing else but voice notes. I don’t get it.

What’s your ultimate throwback snack?

Chiko roll — you can’t knock the roll.

Who was your first celebrity crush – and do you stand by it?

Samantha from Bewitched. I was seven. I was deeply in love. I stand by it. The way that witch twitched her nose. Wow.

Favourite piece of slang from your generation?

“Gutsy.” It meant “grouse,” which means good.

What do you think the other generations are most wrong about?

They are too self-obsessed. Actually, so was my generation, or maybe it was just me.

One thing you still don’t understand about your own generation?

How did we survive without a supercomputer attached to all the world’s knowledge from the beginning of civilisation in our pockets? How did we just spend time with our own thoughts as company? Just how did we endure that?

If you could bring back one trend from your youth, what would it be?

Yo-yos. Doing tricks like ‘walking the dog’ and ‘rocking the cradle’. Just endless hours of fun.

Finally, in five words or less – describe your generation.

We didn’t get participate trophies.
