What is your role and what does it entail? (Also, how long have you been with Paramount?)
I am the National Advertising Activations Lead out of Paramount Brand Studio and I’ve been with the company since December 2007. I project manage sponsorships across MasterChef Australia, helping brands integrate in show; from the appliances the contestants use, to the ingredients they cook with and the places they travel. Once we are on air, I then amplify these moments with bespoke sponsorship assets scheduled throughout commercial breaks. In a single season of MasterChef we will produce over 100 unique sponsorship assets like playouts and IDs, whilst in show we will deliver over 1,000 sponsor moments. The next time you see a contestant using a matt black Kitchenaid Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer…you’ll know how it got there!
Can you tell us about your career journey so far and how you ended up in your current role?
Not many people know this about me, but I originally studied Horticulture to be a Landscape Architect. I loved it but at the same time I felt a strong pull toward TV production, so when we had to do month-long work experience as part of our studies, I contacted a production company that made a TV program about garden makeovers. They ended up employing me as their Runner and it was this job where I decided I wanted to work in TV. Years later I was hired for my first role at Channel 10, as an Advertorial Production Assistant for 9am with David & Kim which eventually led to a Producer role for The Circle. Sadly, the program was axed and it seemed like my time at Channel 10 was up until HR suggested I go for a role in the team that manages MasterChef sponsorships. The rest is history.
What do you love about your job and working at Paramount?
Working for a company that supports working parents is a big one, plus I know everyone says this, but it’s the people. I feel very lucky that I get to work with colleagues who have become lifelong friends. My favourite part of my job is anytime I get the opportunity to put my producer hat back on – writing scripts, editing playouts and pitching MasterChef challenges to production. Keep an eye out for an upcoming service challenge at a Sydney pub, sponsored by James Squire!
What are the challenges in your role?
I would say the biggest challenge is being the middleman between the client and production and having to mediate to ensure we find a solution that works for all. My relationship with production is as equally important to my relationship with clients, so keeping everyone happy can be quite the juggle. Problem solving is definitely one of the biggest parts of my job.
Who is the Rebecca Yeoh outside of Paramount? What do you love to do on weekends?
I love to make the most of a weekend, so I always get up early at around 6.30am and start slow with a cup of tea whilst my kids Eva and Finn sleep in. If we don’t have Saturday sport on, we’ll often go for lunch in China Town. Afternoons are for relaxing at home, watching NRL with my husband Chris (go the Bunnies), walking my Beagle, Olive, and of course gardening, which I’m still very fond of. I always try to fit in some exercise, whether it be a long walk with a friend, or swimming laps at the local pool.
