Keep on survivin’

September 19, 2019

She schemed. She lied. She smiled, like, a lot. And in the remarkable season finale of Australian Survivor, actor Pia Miranda emerged triumphant, taking home a tidy $500,000 and the title of Sole Survivor.

After surviving a six-and-a-half hour challenge, the longest in Australian Survivor history, Pia faced off against Baden in the final Tribal Council. Her ability to outwit, outlast and outplay all comers was on full display and she took the crown in a landslide vote.

The gripping finale had Australians on the edge of their seats. Make that a lot of Australians: 1.32 million people watched Pia’s victory, a 10% increase on last year’s number. Among under 50s, The Winner Announced segment had a commercial audience share of more than 53%.

The finale capped an amazing season for Australian Survivor. How amazing? Well…

  • Nationally, the show’s total average audience was up 6% on last year, to 1.14 million.
  • In the capital cities, its total average audience jumped 10% year on year, to 912,000.
  • It trumped rival shows in the demos, ranking #1 in under 50s, 16 to 39s, 18 to 49s and 25 to 54s.
  • Seven-day BVOD viewing on 10 Play soared 37% versus 2018, to 82,000.
  • On social, it was the most talked about entertainment show during its run. Total social interactions on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter soared 144% year on year.
  • Australians connected with the show in unexpected ways. Example: the GoFundMe page that sprung up after fan favourite Luke was eliminated. The page raised over $550,000. Name another TV show this year that spawned a GoFundMe page? You can’t. That’s the power of 10.
