Sure, there are horses at Melbourne Cup but we all know that the fashion is the mane event.
Which is why we caught up our official glitz and glamour reporters, Rob Mills and Kate Freebairn, to get some insights on the trends headed to the racecourse!
What do you love most about hosting the Fashion & Entertainment for Melbourne Cup Carnival?
Kate: We all know that the Melbourne Cup Carnival is as much about the fashion as it is the races – so I’m most looking forward to dressing up! We’ve been stuck in the house in activewear for so long, and now I can’t wait to see everyone go all out.
Rob: I’m looking forward to being outside again, around other people! I’m looking forward to working with Kate, we met last year at the Carnival and she has such a wonderful disposition. Oh and Georgie. It’ll be the first time we’ve worked on the same project together. We will be carpooling.
What fashion trends do you expect to see this year?
Kate: Coming out of lockdown, this year’s Carnival is a big celebration – and I expect the fashion to reflect that. We’ll be seeing lots of bold and bright block colours, coloured tailored suits, and balloon sleeves.
When it comes to headwear – headbands are the new fascinators. But a great hat will never go out of style!
Rob: I’m expecting big things from our Aussie designers who will be using this time to showcase to the world there is more than just activewear to wear. Big, bold prints and plenty of colour.
What are the Do’s and the oh-my-god-the-absolute-do-NOTs of racewear?
Kate: Do – Have fun with it, but keep it classy.
Do NOT – TAKE. OFF. YOUR. SHOES. No matter how many drinks you’ve had! No one wants to be that person caught on camera in bare feet at the end of the day!
Rob: I will not dare speak on women’s fashion, I have no idea!
But for men’s… DO’s: Details. Accessorise. Socks.
DON’T’s: Learn from me… don’t wear white shoes or white sunglasses.
Can you give us any hints about what you’ll be wearing on Cup Day?
Kate: I’ve teamed up with an incredible Melbourne designer who is creating something special for me. It’s bold and fun, and something very different for me!
Rob: A gentleman never tells…
