Have You Met Will?

July 3, 2023

Will, tell us a bit about your back story.

I am originally from Armidale, NSW, but at the age of 10 I moved to Newcastle. I am a proud Wiradjuri man with my family roots in Wellington NSW.

After finishing school in Newcastle, I moved to Sydney to study at the University of Sydney, and I am about to finish my Bachelor of Arts majoring in Philosophy.

How did you connect with CareerTrackers?

I connected with CareerTrackers through a university friend. He was finishing off his contract details for his first internship with Westpac and I thought I’d reach out and see if I could also get some work during the Uni break.

I originally did an internship with the Department of Planning and then a second one with Crown Lands before moving to 10.

This is my third internship with 10 and I am loving it!

When did you start at Network 10?

I started with Network 10 in July 2022, during the winter break in between Uni semester. That internship was around five weeks. I then did another internship over the summer break at the beginning of the year, for around 8 weeks.

What makes you keep coming back to 10?

I was drawn to work at 10 because I am really interested in media and, more broadly, journalism. The great thing about CareerTrackers is it allows you to try different roles and industries.

Graduating in arts, it is a fairly typical trend to get involved in the media industry – so I thought I’d give it a crack!

What is your title, and what do you do in a typical day?

I am a Promotions Intern. I was in Social Media for my first internship, then Marketing for my second.

I have had quite varied jobs at 10. An average day in promotions would be video editing for some socials posts (at the moment this is The Amazing Race). Along with this, most days I will be involved in posting on MTV or Nickelodeon.

What’s your experience been like working at 10?

My experience working at 10 has been great! I really enjoy the work lifestyle when Uni is not on (and vice versa). I also really enjoy the work – I’ve learnt so many great practical skills, whether that be related to corporate work or video editing, there are so many opportunities to progress and learn. Most importantly, I love the team I’m working in, everyone is always up for coffee and a chat!

What are your career aspirations?

I wish I knew! I love working a 10, but I also think I do want to keep studying – as to what, I am not too sure. I’ve been thinking about pursuing teaching or even physio. I have some thinking to do…

This year’s NAIDOC Week theme is ‘For Our Elders’. What does this theme mean to you?

This year’s NAIDOC theme is really important to me. I think it is a powerful theme which has a double meaning. We need to recognise and show respect to the Elders who have been the custodians of this country for a long time. We also need to acknowledge and foster the wisdom that is passed onto the younger generation of Indigenous people and Australians in general.

However, I think this message also rings true for all Elders – All of our elders carry wisdom and messages which shouldn’t be ignored. We all have a role in this transfer of knowledge from Elders to youth, and for this reason we need to appreciate and show respect for our Elders.
