10 News First Adelaide ran special election bulletins on election day last Saturday and Sunday, giving our audience the complete picture of how the poll unfolded.
It was a huge effort from everyone in the newsroom to pull together such dynamic coverage featuring a huge amount of live content to deliver the latest insights.
The Water Cooler chats with 10 News First Adelaide senior journalist, Alan Murrell.
How many years have you been reporting the news?
Overall I’ve been reporting for 38-39 years. I did some considerable weeks over third year Uni interning at the Borderwatch in Mt Gambier, a year in Shepparton and two in Melbourne over the journey.
How many elections have you covered?
By my count, seven state elections in South Australia. I also did some reporting during two state elections in Victoria and perhaps as many as 12 Federal polls.
What is your favourite thing about your job?
Being right in the middle of the action as the whole future of the state changes – and in direct contact with the players.
On the good days, you can feel history being made.
What goes on behind the scenes of an election coverage? Exactly how many coffees were consumed?
It’s a nonstop maelstrom following each of the campaigns, constant calls and texts, running to each of the parties, and running to the office to make it all fit.
And if you want a coffee, get it early morning. It’s your only chance.
Were there any surprises on the night?
The size of the Labor win and the speed it was apparent, and the loss of seats by supposedly safe MPs.
Do you have a hobby or passion outside of work?
Economic/finance developments, decent wine and SA food produce and classic movies. Oh yes and a spot of Wordle.
If you were to swap jobs with anyone in the building, who would it be and why?
I thought about this a bit. The honest answer is I wouldn’t.
