Gibney More! Five Minutes With Rebecca

October 5, 2021

MasterChef fans rejoice! Melissa, Jock and Andy are back to fill the dumpling shaped void in your life.

Celebrity MasterChef Australia kicks off this Sunday and, as a special treat for our readers, The Water Cooler’s Entertainment Editor, Mat Whitehead, caught up with celebrity contestant Rebecca Gibney to talk all things flambé, sauté and crudité.

What was your first thought when you were asked to join the CMC cast?

I said no!

My agent rang and said, do you want to do MasterChef and I went, “Are you sure not Australian Survivor or I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Here? I don’t really cook!”

My husband’s the chef of the family so I said no, and when I told my 17-year-old son he was mortified. He loves it, he said he’d disown me as his mother if I didn’t say yes.

I said “But darling, I’m not really a good cook, I’ll make a fool of myself”, and he said “Yeah, but it’ll make great telly!”.

What was it like cooking for the judges?

We all felt terrified of what they were going to say, and not because they’re scary, we all know that they’re actually really lovely, but I didn’t want to disappoint anyone because I felt so out of my comfort zone and I’m not the best cook.

I thought, all I can really do is my best and hope that they like it.

What kind of dishes did you want to serve to the judges?

I’m a storyteller. As an actor and a producer I’m a storyteller and I thought, if I can’t be the world’s best chef I can at least tell a story through my food.

I’d rather bring dishes that meant something to me growing up, something that had a story. That was my game plan.

When it comes to the title of MasterChef, are you very competitive?

You know what, not at all. I’m the total opposite. I just went in thinking I’m going to be the light relief because I’m not going to know anything!

I don’t know half the equipment, how it works or what it does. I’m just going to go in and try and I’ll probably get out first!

What did you think of your fellow Celebrity chefs?

I knew a few of them before but I’ve become friends for life with so many of them.

I think all of us just said yes without really thinking about it and then when you go through those doors, the enormity hits every single one of us standing there and all of a sudden it’s a reality that you are going to have to cook!

We all felt the same and it bonded us.

Celebrity MasterChef Australia.
