As a Bondi Rescue mega fan, the Editor of this publication was extremely excited to shell-ebrate the show’s return to our screens with a chat with none other than Bruce ‘Hoppo’ Hopkins! Rest assured, it went swimmingly.
In the Australian Lifeguards system, water related drownings are considered especially heinous. In Bondi Beach, the dedicated lifeguards who save people from these vicious drownings are members of elite watermen known as the Bondi Rescue Unit.
These are their stories. DUN DUN.
There’s been well over 200 episodes of Bondi Rescue where we’ve seen just about everything. What are the standout moments to you, good and bad?
The good – working with a team of elite watermen and the countless number of lives we have saved.
The bad – unfortunately, we can’t save everyone which is heart breaking.
Why do you think viewers love the show so much?
What you see is what you get. We are not actors, this is our everyday job, and nothing is scripted which I think the audience like. The show provides viewers with an insight to our world working on one of the busiest beaches and they also get to see our personalities, both under pressure and when we are having a laugh with each other .
It’s very clear from the show that becoming a Bondi lifeguard is extremely challenging. What are the non-negotiables for you when you’re recruiting? What does every lifeguard have to have?
Passion for saving lives, undeniable water skills and a great work ethic to collaborate with the other Lifeguards. Take direction and work together as a team. There is no place for ego when lives are at risk.
How often do you have people return to the beach to thank you for rescuing them?
We have had many people come back to thank us, it’s always a great feeling.
We know that Bondi Beach has a permanent spot in your heart but what are your other favourite beaches either within Australia or around the globe?
I moved up to the Northern Beaches in Sydney in 2020 and now live in Newport. I love the Pittwater, it’s a great place for me to train for the ocean ski series. I am also a big fan of One Mile beach at Forster, we often head up there for a weekend getaway.
Finally (and be honest), is ‘In The Summertime’ your ring tone?
It should be, but no…
